I love knits! I love all about it - the cosy, chunky feel of knitted patterns in pure sheep wool, or the warm feeling of a smooth cashmere. I love wearing knits, and making them too.
So on this beautiful autumn day - a post about cosy knits in style, Read on and leave your comments of favorite knits.
#1. Chunky stuff.
Chunky is about the quality and cut of wool. Chunky knits and bulky cuts look amazing! They look and feel like the ultimate state of comfort. Here are a few suggestions on how to style chunky knits:
- Pair it with romantic soft flowing fabrics (like a plissé skirt or flower-dress). The playful combination of light romantic style with chunky knits is the ultimate Parisian look of the season!
- Add natural material: chunky jewelry, leather, wood and stone work beautifully with chunky wool. It is the ultimate nature & earthy feeling, especially in natural colors like off-white, soft browns and beiges, black, greens, soft pinks and blues etc.
- A tight skirt or pants will emphasize your figure through the contrast of bulkiness to snugness.
#2. Bright colors.
Color is in fashion! Any bright piece(s) as uni-colored statements of your love of color, or an ethnic print, graphic print or just bold color-blocks - Life in Color is fun! Yet, strong color is a very powerful statement in itself, and it is likely to dominate your outfit, so let's not overload it:
- Echo your color by repeating it (for example in boots, bag or bracelets). Echo can be the repetition of the same color, or off-setting it with a matching tone or contrast. Imagine an ochre colored long cardigan and a bright turquoise scarf!
- Frame it by giving a single tone all around it - imagine a grey skirt, grey boots, grey scarf.. and in the middle of it all - bright pink sweater! See that frame? It looks beautiful, doesn’t it!
- Oh, and my favorite: bright colored knitted socks!! LOVE the feeling and the look of the knitted socks as an off-set to almost any outfit!
#3. Soft, smooth, elegant!
Many soft wool knits made of cashmere or alpaca have an amazing elegancy potential to them. They come in many colors and cuts like soft jumpers, coats, skirts etc. What they all have in common is relatively snug but not too fitted cut, and usually the material is rather thin although they can be very warm! Skirts, pants and coats of these soft wools are always lined. The other thing they have in common is that these pieces are rather pricey if the are of good quality, and need to be well-taken care of! The elegancy fades if the piece loses shape or gathers little knots. Ensure to wash carefully and only when needed, and conserve these pieces well!
The secret to styling these special knits is to support their classic elegancy:
- Ensure footwear matching classical style. Classical boots, or high heels, ballerina flats, .. whatever type of footwear you like, go high on the classical elegance scale!
- Combine with similarly classic materials to the outfit, like leather or silk. Of course that cashmere jumper will look very pretty with jeans too, but rather classic cut jeans with a leather belt and maybe a leather jacket? Can you add a silk scarf if that’s your style? I am sure by now you feel simply royal in that timeless elegance!
