This question is as old as the world, addressed in many ways and many times by philosophers, anthropologists, people of art and design, doctors… and yes, stylists too.
In simple words- beauty is something we find pleasing to the eye. So we often find symmetry beautiful.
We also find healthy people beautiful. In general, the story goes something like that: Mating animals and people will be ‘looking’ for a partner who seems healthy and has good genes. So without consciously thinking about it - we find those who seem healthy also attractive and beautiful.
But that all leads to a rather sterile and boring type of beauty.
Today on a walk I listened to one of my favorite podcasts - Deeply Human, and specifically their episode called ‘Mirror, mirror’. By the way -I love that podcast and highly recommend it! They cover all sorts of interesting topics, and do it in a fun way!
Today that podcast just exactly resonated with my thoughts. The classic definition of beauty would be just stale boring without something that would literally grab one’s interest. We want something more intriguing, some conflict, dissymmetry, something surprising or maybe even shocking! We want that in people, so we can connect to them at some deeper human level. Because that is where real beauty resides - it is in your personality.
And that is when styling comes in. Styling beautifully means to me to be styled in a way that guides attention to the uniqueness of YOU, shows who you are, not just how you look.
All that is needed to style yourself that way is to determine what is that feature of your personality that you want to put at the center of attention. And then, finding ways to express that feature through style. By designing a way to reduce ‘noise’ of the rest of the style and creating focus on the features of your face, your body shape, and your personality that you want to be proud of, you create your own, unmistakably personal style. And that will not only show your beauty to the world. More importantly, it will make you feel powerful and confident about your inner beauty!
